The Fugs took poetry, irreverence, nihilism, comedy, and folk music, and twisted these elements into a knotty rope that not only tied the beatnik 50s to the hippie 60s, but up until the present day, where one might say those elements are in needed in a culture short on meaning and long on mockery (or maybe The Fugs and other musical satirists spawned the current use of ubiqui-twaddle. Discuss.). Anyway, this pretty damn important band (look ‘em up) doesn’t have Tuli Kupferberg (RIP) but still features the wit and wisdom of poet Ed Sanders, and some “newer” Fugs who’ve been in the band since the late 80s. It’s almost kind of impossible to see a band like this, even if they’re not the Fugs of yore, because frankly, Fuggishness is probably more of a state of mind or a societal stance than even being in a band or playing music. Trust us when we say there will NEVER be a Fugs again. The band knows this too, and so there are rumors out and about regarding their inevitable demise (through retirement or actual death). So take note. You might not get a whole lot of Fugs in the future. Here’s your chance to grab a little history, music junkies.
