Grant Hart is a name that conjures images of finely crafted songs with lyrical content that challenges and empathizes with our perception of the world. Grant is probably best known for his contributions to the integrity and success of the '80's musical group, Husker Du, which made up nine years of his more than twenty-year artistic excursion. Yet, his new collection of songs, Good News for Modern Man on Pachyderm Records, gives reason to retrace the career that has brought him to create a record regarded by many as Grant at the height of his craft.
In 1979, Grant and two friends, Greg Norton and Bob Mould, formed the band Husker Du in St. Paul, Minnesota. Over the course of nine years, Husker Du recorded three singles, six albums, and two double-albums. They also found time to tour the U.S. eleven times and Europe four times, while appearing on many U.S. and European television and radio programs. Husker Du was constantly at the top of college radio playlists, with six albums reaching the number one position, a feat surpassed only by R.E.M. In 1986, Husker Du signed a seven album worldwide record deal with Warner Bros. Records. A&R representative Karin Berg worked with the band for over a year to arrange conditions which entrusted the highest degree of artistic freedom to Husker Du. Grant and guitarist Bob Mould were producers for all of their recordings.
