Chicago quartet WHALES experiment with a heady mix of noise, rock and melody on their debut, self-titled LP. The outfit has been kicking around the city for the last few years with their loosely-structured rock songs artfully blending noise and melody into thoughtfully constructed songs through MAIGIN BLANK’S haunting and flat lined vocals. Expanding on the familiar soundscapes of early shoegaze, GRIMBLE GRUMBLE bring a slower, less abrasive approach to the sound they’ve been mastering since the mid-90s heyday of drone and post-rock. Their sludgy space-rock drenched in reverb, feedback and overlapping guitar melodies dramatically rises and falls while a steady rhythm section and sparse vocals flesh out their cosmic jams. Opening tonight’s early show are ambient rock band MIRACLE CONDITION, who have been dubbed "shoegaze meets post-rock" by RCRD LBL, called "both haunting and beguiling" by Pitchfork and praised for "an angelic bombast displaying a new affinity for sublime space rock," by Time Out Chicago.
