Sounding the Pacific:
Musical Instruments of Oceania

November 17, 2009–September 6, 2010

Featuring more than 50 outstanding works—including percussion, wind, string, and forms unique to the Pacific—this exhibition explores the diverse musical instruments of Oceania and the many different roles they play in Pacific cultures, from announcing the onset of war, to embodying the voices of supernatural beings or softly enticing a lover.

The Young Archer
Attributed to Michelangelo

Now on view

The Young Archer, a fragmentary figure of a nude youth attributed to the teenage Michelangelo Buonarroti, is on special long-term loan to the Met from the French Republic. While strong evidence supports the theory that Michelangelo was its creator, some scholars are still in debate. Visitors are encouraged to view the sculpture, read its history, and decide for themselves.

The New American Wing:
The Charles Engelhard Court
and the Period Rooms

Now Open

From monumental sculpture to stunning stained-glass windows by Tiffany, The Charles Engelhard Court is the grand gateway to the Met's unparalleled collections of American art. The newly renovated American Wing also features superb ceramics, glass, silver, pewter, jewelry, and paintings as well as three centuries of domestic architecture, furniture, and interior design, including a Frank Lloyd Wright living room.
